MESSAGE TO THE CHILDREN WORLD FORUM
FROM THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO

Dear Children,

By using the Internet to exchange messages of peace and understanding, youset an example to the world. The Internet is indeed a powerful tool thatmay serve to rise above all differences, including differences of language,and enable people together, to put an end to war and the culture ofsuspicion, misunderstanding and violence that lies behind it. Instead ofsuspicion, messages of friendliness. Instead of misunderstanding, dialogue.
Instead of violence, a commitment to justice through active non-violence.You may wish to join with some 75 million people who have signed Manifesto 2000 for a culture of peace and non-violence: “I pledge in my daily life, in my family, my work, my community, my country and my region, to: respect a life, reject violence, share with others, listen to understand, preserve the planet and rediscover solidarity.”
By taking part in this event today, and by taking the pledge embodied in
Manifesto 2000, you join the Global Movement for a Culture of Peace and
Non-Violence. This movement is supported by the United Nations in the
spirit of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010), which begins this year with the United Nations Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations.

UNESCO Clubs’ Youth Declaration of Strasbourg
The Democratic Trainings of the Youth in Europe
Sharing our own experiences and feelings about how to build a better and more effective democratic Europe, we, young people from Bulgaria, Catalonia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Moldavia, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Switzerland, are meeting in Strasbourg, France, from 26th to 31st July 2004 and achieve to make the following declaration:

From our discussion, we recognize that our common values are the respect of the human rights, the promotion of tolerance as the respect of differences, solidarity, the consciousness and the self-criticism, the responsibility, the active participation, the sharing of knowledge, the dialogue and the debate of ideas, the knowledge of history, universality and the encouragement of diversity and creativity.
In order to achieve a better democracy, which protects and develops those common values, we identify political, social, educational, economical, cultural and moral obstacles. Included in all these fields, we stress on the fear of changes, the social and generation gap, discrimination, money alienation, the negative role and monopoly of media, the culture of competition and prejudices. We also deplore the lack of interests and participation of the citizens. We declare education as a tool for the UNESCO Clubs to overcome all these obstacles.
Knowing the values we share as Europeans and conscious of the obstacles that prevent the development of Democracy and the Culture of Peace, we, young people from the UNESCO Clubs we advocate:
― Using new technologies to build a network among the members of the UNESCO Clubs in Europe in order to share projects and experiences and to spread the movement of the UNESCO Clubs;
― Having a closer relationship with schools and local communities, promoting our values to all young people and giving them the possibility to express themselves into a democratic system;
― Starting a reflection to develop concrete projects about the knowledge of history, intercultural exchanges and life-long education for a democratic environment concerning family and education.
The international dimension, which is the one of the UNESCO Clubs, must not make forget what is happening around us because globalisation has no border.

As a result, a web page will be created and links will be developed to provide opportunities for feedback and interaction. Romania and Russia will be the coordinating leaders.

We also decide to disseminate the results of this meeting to all National Federations and coordinating bodies of UNESCO Clubs as well to all National Commissions for UNESCO in the European region.
We express our sincere thanks and full appreciation to the Greek authorities for hosting this important regional meeting, to UNESCO, and particularly to the Section for UNESCO Clubs and New Partnerships, whose support has been essential for the realization of this event and last but not least to the Secretariat of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs which coordinated this event.
We appeal to UNESCO, our partner organizations and National Commissions for UNESCO to continue, to the extend possible, their support and contribution to the reinforcement of the UNESCO Clubs Movement.
